According to a report published in JOURNAL OF HEPATOLOGY, China has a large population size of patients with liver disease (1.4 billion, 2019) and the largest number of liver cancer patients in the world; according to a report published in The Lancet [2], the prevalence of hepatitis B infection in China is as high as 5.1% to 10%, and about 80 million people in China are carriers of the virus, of which 20 million are diagnosed patients. And liver transplantation is the only effective salvage treatment for end-stage liver disease, congenital hepatobiliary disease. China performed nearly 4,000 liver transplants in 2016, however, nearly 5,000 people are still waiting for liver transplants in the country by the end of 2019, according to the China Organ Transplant Development Report (2019). Increasing the number of organs available for transplantation and ensuring liver quality, while reducing post-transplant complications and shortening hospitalization time, are therefore important clinical goals to improve patient outcomes after surgery.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

A controlled clinical feasibility study using a prototype LifePort liver run-in box at Columbia University Medical Center found [3] that biliary complications were reduced by 501 TP3T in patients with LifePort-perfused livers.The rate of early allograft dysfunction in statically refrigerated livers was 251 TP3T, compared to LifePort-perfused livers at 5% (p = 0.08). In addition, patients with LifePort-perfused livers had significantly lower hospitalization times than patients with static refrigerated livers (10.9 \u00b1 4.7 days vs. 15.3 \u00b1 4.9 days; p = 0.006).<\/p>\n

Another controlled study explored the difference in postoperative outcomes between cryo-mechanical perfusion preservation and static refrigeration for expanded standard livers rejected by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) [4]. Significantly fewer biliary complications were found in the perfusion group at 12 months post-transplant (4 vs. 13; P = 0.016), as well as a lower incidence of early allograft dysfunction (19% vs. 30%). The mean length of hospitalization was also significantly shorter in the perfusion group (13.6 vs. 21.1 days). The results suggest that cryo-machine perfusion (HMP) of the liver is safe for transplantation of enlarged standard livers that are considered non-transplantable by multiple centers. The study suggests that HMP has the potential to increase the number of donors and provide transplantable livers for patients on the waiting list.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

The LifePort Liver Runner is currently undergoing a multi-center clinical study in the United States and is the world's first hepatic cryomechanical perfusion product to enter the clinical validation phase of FDA registration. Donor-donated livers are connected to pumps that continuously circulate a cold, oxygenated medical solution throughout the liver to maintain cellular activity and prevent clotting. Temperature is monitored digitally on a device throughout the transportation process. This machine displays real-time data on certain changes that may have occurred, thus allowing for better monitoring of the liver's condition.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n<\/section>\n

With enrollment of 152 patients now nearing completion, the Liver Cryoperfusion Transporter has taken a major step forward in submitting its registration application to the FDA, which is awaiting the results of the clinical trial.
